Why and How Belief in a Personal God benefits Human Relationships

Family, Heartbreak

Believing in a real singular personal God imparts positive benefits to our human relationships.

Why Believe

Good relationships obviously depend upon and concern persons with personalities. All sincere and fair relationships function to try to meet the needs and desires of its members. It is also obvious that well-functioning successful relationships must use identity, personality, communication, and mutual honor and respect to achieve a level of satisfaction for all members. What is not obvious to many people is the importance and implications of human spirituality for human relationships. Human spirituality per se refers to another relationship—one between a human being and a divine force. Consequently, spirituality has an impact upon the quality and tenor of our human relationships. To understand this connection, consider several factors. How these factors combine and are applied influence your human relationships.

1.         The term “spirituality” refers to a meaningful relational connection between a human being and a divine force(s) in the universe. By our spirituality, we seek to find inner meaning, healing, peace, satisfaction, affirmation, and completeness of being. Our intent in spirituality is due to a deeply seated intuition in most people that human nature has a legitimate spiritual aspect, and that aspect needs to be respected, appreciated, and fed. However, while meaningful spiritualty is respected and sought after by many people, and although relationships between human beings may function successfully regardless of one’s religion, the significance of personalized spirituality should not be ignored.

2.         As in all spiritually focused religions, mankind is a marvelous and complex intelligent creature. Mankind, in some fashion or another, is a by-product of a universal divine force(s). Man’s spiritual aspect requires the truth that man is a vessel of sorts, made by a divine universal power of sorts. After all, it is a well-established scientific and philosophical principle that something cannot come from nothing. The spiritual side of human nature has its energetic origin in, and link to, the divine power(s) of the universe. However, man is also personality with identity.

3.         Another universal principle is that the greater produces the lesser, not vice versa. The “greater” and the “lesser” indicate relative quality, maturity, or strength of energy, not size. Also, there is relative similarity in content between the greater and the lesser; thus, a naturally born child shows certain similarities with its parent, and the child does not give birth to the parent. The greater gives rise to the lesser, while the lesser possesses some similarities with its greater source. Many people do not realize that the same principles truthfully apply to human spirituality.

4.         Thus far we have observed four principles: First, mankind has inherent and intuitive spirituality. Second, man is a personal, complex, and relational creature, having personality and ego-identity. Third, there is a universal law that something cannot come from nothing. Fourth, there is a universal law that the greater produces the lesser, not vice versa. Respecting and combining these four truths, we conclude that the most fulfilling, satisfying, and meaningful spirituality for mankind to embrace is derived from belief in a real, definite, personal, relational, communicative, and spiritually universal God. This is true, for man himself has a spiritual side. Man is personal, with an ego-identity, rationality, emotions, and temporary material body. Man has personality with temperament, talents, abilities, preferences, and creativity. Man is relational with fellow humans, to animals and other elements of nature, and to spiritual universal power. The only divine universal power to give rise to such marvelous human creature is a complete, personal, relational, all-powerful, creative God, who Himself has a defined identity (that is, a real, singular, personal, relational God who bears an identity and name of His own).

How Relationship Benefits Happen

1.         The understanding is then that human spirituality based on belief in a real, personal, singular, rational, emotional, relational, supernatural, omnipotent, creative, universal God is a human spirituality of the highest order, with the purest and greatest quality. Such a spirituality is the most thoroughly influential kind upon man’s individual growth and development. Such spirituality is the most comprehensively influential for good in man’s relationships with fellow men and women. Sincere belief in a singular, personal, omnipotent God who possesses and reveals His own personality and identity in intimate spiritual relationship with man is the most completely satisfying spirituality to embrace and maintain. Because this evaluation is integral, that belief in such a singular, personal, and relational God carries positive benefits into man’s relationships with fellow men and women.

2.         Some human inter-relational benefits of sincere belief in a singular, personal, relational, omnipotent God include the following:

  • We experience an ideal model of unconditional love relationship with God, which can be remodeled and shared by us in our relationships with other humans. Unconditional love involves accepting other people for who they are including personality type, weaknesses, and faults, without selfishly trying to change them.
  • We can feel secure in our self-worth and self-acceptance through relationship with God, which encourages us to perceive the inherent worth of other people as distinct from their negative behaviors.
  • We can be encouraged and peacefully consoled that in God there is a rational ultimate justice in the universe that appreciates our hurt feelings and sufferings. So we can share longsuffering patience in our human relationships, while we have confidence that there is an ultimate logical, organized, moral, fair, and compassionate justice over all mankind.
  • In relationship with God we can experience and realize as individuals the depths of His personal forgiveness and reconciliation process, which are not identical with unconditional love. These priceless traits can be remodeled and shared by us toward our fellow humans, regardless of who they are as individuals.
  • By relationship with a personal God, we see and learn God’s rational and emotional wounding-plus-healing process (a change process), which can be applied to our human relationships when we deliberately assist people to cleanse, change, and improve themselves and their relationships.
  • There is truly no loneliness for the person who has a relationship with a singular personal supernatural God. Human loneliness becomes simply a negative emotional illusion. We can experience and teach this truth to others of our human relationships, to bolster their feelings of security and inner courageous peace.
  • In relationship with God we can experience vital and consistent hope for good experiences in our future, for we know that our unpredictable future is under the control of a rational and organized Divine Being who appreciates our individual needs and desires. From this lesson we can assist other people to have consistent positive hope for their future well-being and happiness.

Clarification

1.         We have noted seven example benefits for our human relationships; benefits produced by faith-based spiritual relationship with a personal, rational, moral, relational God who communicates and reveals His identity and goodness to men. However, some clarification is necessary. First, belief and commitment to a singular personal God is a definite religious perspective. We are not here saying that healthy helpful human relationships are not possible outside of this one religious perspective, because a singular personal God is spiritually infinite and at work everywhere. Successful and beneficial human relationships can exist regardless of one’s religion.

2.         Second, it is obvious that sincere belief in a singular personal God does not assure good human behavior on behalf of quality human relationships. Any lack of good quality human behavior by believers in their relationships is due to human weakness, not due to the personal God itself, or due to unsatisfactory benefits the personal God is capable to impart. As mankind does possess free will and weaknesses, genuine relationship with a singular, personal, all-powerful God does not guarantee good human behavior.

3.         The point here is that there is a depth of quality and meaning, along with a ready-made wealth of practical human applications, that are learned and experienced by sincere faith-based spiritual relationship with a God who has a definitive identity and is personal, relational, all-powerful, and supernatural. Spiritual intimate relationship with a singular personal God holds the believer in the greatest possible quality relationship model to experience and learn to share in his/her imperfect daily human relationships.

Conclusion

1.         It is natural for us to often desire and try to improve or expand the quality or meaningfulness of our human relationships. The best quality human relationships appreciate and respect the spiritual aspect of man’s nature. In all fields of endeavor men and women strive for deeper knowledge and more understanding with accomplishment. The same is true in the spiritual life of man.

2.         As we may strive for sincere deeper meaning and quality in our spiritual life, we can discover and experience the reality of a personal, relational, creative God who has His identity, for mankind is created in God’s similarity of personhood. In knowing and experiencing this personal God by faith, we can be affected and transformed for our well-being by His pure and complete character.

3.         The intimate spiritual transformational experience that the believer has with the singular personal God hopefully reveals itself through good qualities and initiatives in the believer’s human relationships. The believer absorbs and learns the personal God’s good and complete character, and ideally replicates it in his/her human relationships. In this way, all members of the personal God-believer’s human relationships can receive spiritually-based and practical benefit, regardless of the members’ own religious viewpoints.

Thanks be to the definite, personal, supernatural, omnipotent, relational and creative God, who imparts to us peace, joy, and completeness in our human relationships through transformational faith relationship with Him!
